I Duel With Originally, Joey's deck is comprised of mostly Warrior-Type monsters. As he progresses, Joey begins adding more and more types of cards to his arsenal. He also uses luck based cards like "Question", "Graceful Dice", and "Skull Dice" in the series, mostly in the Battle City arc later on using monsters with power special effects such as "Gilford the Lightning" and "Blue Flame Swordsman". His dependency on luck (which works surprisingly well for him) started after he defeated Mai Valentine with "Time Wizard".

Joey's hairstyle changes drastically. At one time featuring two large fringes in front of his ears, the hairstyle changes to a sporadically arranged and unrealistic hairstyle. Joey's first color appearance depicts him with medium brown hair and black eyes. Subsequent appearances lighten the hair color to dirty blond and blond. His eyes are portrayed as brown or hazel.

◊ && I’ve Wasted Enough Time Already ◊
16-year old Joey, who is in class 1-B at Domino High School, is a hothead and his mouth gets him in trouble many times. Joey starts out as a street thug and is part of tough-guy Hirutani's gang for long periods of time while they attend the same middle school. Upon entering Domino High School, he antagonizes Yugi Mutou, who later defends him from a bully. This results in Joey greatly respecting Yugi and becoming his best friend. His other two good friends are Tristan Taylor and Téa Gardner.
Joey is poor, due to his father's gambling addictions and alcoholism. Jounouchi goes to great lengths to repay his father's debts, such as working at multiple jobs (he was the "lone paperboy" in middle school, meaning that he was one of the few that were permitted to work while going to school) and going on the "Get the Million" game show. Ironically, many of his cards contain a gambling theme, and often, his strong luck helps him win in the end.
Joey's skill at Duel Monsters is somewhat near as good as that of Yugi's, but he still duels as part of a tag team on occasions and he strives to improve his skill. Joey is referred to by, in Pegasus's opinion, the third-best duelist in the world, behind Yuugi and Kaiba.
Joey has a sister named Serenity Wheeler. Their parents divorced when Joey was 10. Their mother took custody of Serenity, while Jounouchi's father retained his custody. When Serenity started to go blind, Joey entered the Duelist Kingdom tournament to finance her eye surgery. Joey places second to Yugi in the event, although Yugi gives him the money to finance the surgery. Serenity is chronically ill and in the hospital. Therefore Joey ensures that she gets the best care in the hospital.

Joey is somewhat of the comic relief of the group. He acts before he thinks, and that gets him into trouble. He has a qiuck temper, and picks fights a lot. Sometimes he puts himself down, and thinks he's useless. Like when Mai tells him that he is Serenity's idol, Joey says he's a bad idol because he got possessed by Marik. But other then that Joey will do anything for his friends/family, even if it means getting himself killed.

Joey wanderd the streets of Domino alone, he had bruses on his chest, his shirt was torn and he had glass bottle shards sticking out of random places on his back. His father had come home drunk again, excpt this time, it was more serious then ever.
When joey had come home from school that day his father was sitting on the couch drinking, as usial. he had bottles of liqur all around him, more then usial. though joey decided to pay no mind to it, he was tired and had had a long hard day at school.
"hey brat...where ya think ya goin" his father had asked. and without looking over his shoulder or turning around the blonde boy just simply held up a sheet of paper in the air and said, "homework" in a low muttering voice. "look brat...don't use use that kind of attitude with me." he said as he stood, beer bottle in hand.
Turning Joey put his hands up a bit, "yo...dad...cool it....im just tired...all i wanna do is get my work done..take a nap and get to work..." and with that his father threw a bottle at Joey's head.
So here joey is, walking down the street, bruses and cuts all over hm. "hope he burns in hell" he mutterd as he kicked a can twards a trash bin. Looking up he could see that it was about to rain, "great..." he mutterd, "maybe i should go to yugi's?" he thought out loud before turning down the street twards Yugi's house.
